Crime Evening in St. Albans

My publishers, No Exit Press, hosted a very successful Crime Evening at St. Albans Central Library on Thursday 21 March.  I was on the panel with fellow No Exit authors Leigh Russell and Howard Linskey.  We each spoke about why we write, how we came to be novelists, and our individual books.  The audience was very receptive and asked a number of excellent questions.  Following this, we signed copies of our books.  Ion Mills and Claire Watts from No Exit were in attendance and welcomed everyone, as well as making sure everything ran smoothly.  As you will see from the photo, the evening also had its lighter moments.  Leigh, Howard and I were pleased to pose on the crime scene mat, but we declined Ion’s suggestion of filling the outline of the missing body!

The event was part of Hertfordshire’s Lit Fest 13.  I will be speaking and signing books at the Oundle Festival on Friday 19 April and at Royston Library on Wednesday 24 April.

Hertfordshire Lit Fest 13: Appearances Coming Up!

I have some appearances coming up at Hertfordshire Lit Fest 13, and I am very much  looking foward to meeting readers and signing copies of Removal and A Higher Duty.  The Fest has some great events, which you can find in detail at  Hertfordshire is home to my publishers, No Exit Press, and you can get full details of all their books at

On Thursday 21 March, I will be on the panel for Crime Evening at St. Albans Library, with fellow No Exit authors Leigh Russell and Howard Linskey.  Between us, I hope we can answer any questions, not only about our own work, but also about the process of writing and getting work published.  This events begins at 7.15 p.m.

On Friday 19 I will be at the Oundle Festival, talking about books and writing beginning at 7.45 p.m.

On Wednesday 24 April I will be at Royston Library to talk about A Higher Duty and the forthcoming series about barrister Ben Schroeder.  A Higher Duty is set in London in the 1960’s, a time when amazing things were happening, and I hope to be able to take readers back to that time and talk about the characters, as well as my own experiences of the period.  Time: 7.15 p.m.

Finally, my sequel to Removal, called Test of Resolve, is complete and with No Exit, and I am awaiting details of the publishing schedule.  More news as available!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  2012 was a great year for me for a number of reasons, not least, of course, the publication of my first novel, Removal.  My thanks to everyone who bought it.  Thanks also to all who took the time to review or comment on it.  I hope you will enjoy my future offerings too.

A Higher Duty will be available in e-book just after midnight on Christmas Day – a perfect last-minute gift if you have left someone off your list!  In 2013 I have a number of appearances planned, including the Oundle Festival and Crime Fest.  I am available to speak to groups of readers and writers, and I am looking forward to speaking to Debbie Cooper’s literary circle near York in April.

Book Signing in Houston, Texas

I had a great book signing in Houston on November 1.  The venue was South Texas College of Law,  I was a member of faculty there for more than 20 years, and the law school features in Removal.  I was asked to give a legal lecture, and the signing took place at the reception afterwards.  I signed all 60+ plus books the bookstore had ordered, and a number of people went away to order on Amazon.  The sequel to Removal involves a South Texas law student, so the link will continue!  My thanks to everyone who made this great event possible!  The pictures show me with Associate Dean Catherine Greene Burnett and a current student during the signing.

Three more novels on the way!

Thank you to everyone who has helped to make Removal such a success.  It has been well reviewed on Amazon, and I have received many messages saying how much you have enjoyed it.  Removal is published by No Exit Press, London, in the UK, and by Arcade Publishing, New York, in the US.  I’m excited to be doing a signing in Houston, Texas, on November 1, more details to follow.   No Exit has signed me up for three more novels.

The first, A Higher Duty, will be out at Christmas in e-book and in paperback in February. It’s a bit different to Removal, a dark tale of blackmail, hypocrisy, and prejudice among barristers in the early 1960’s. If you enjoyed the BBC TV series Silk, you will love this.  When the reputation of a set of barrister’s chambers is threatened by scandal, the gentlemanly air disappears and its head will do whatever is necessary to cover the scandal up and threaten those who want to expose him.  Even justice itself will be sacrificed, the courts manipulated, if necessary.  As a member of the bar myself for many years, I come to this as an insider, and I take you deep inside this refined, but vulnerable world of privilege.

Next will be a sequel to Removal, working title Test of Resolve, to be published in 2013.  After that, the start of a series based on A Higher Duty, based on the cases of criminal barrister Ben Schroeder.  The first in the series has the working title A Matter for the Jury.

Further news as it develops!
